If you have a Heating, Ventilation and Air conditioning system in your home, it is important you change the air filter in the system regularly. A good air filter is the most important thing you can have. It protects the system from frequent breakdowns, prevents expensive maintenance charges, prevents fire, saves you money on energy costs and improves the air quality around your home.
When it comes to replacing the air filter you have two main options: A disposable filter OR a permanent washable media filter.
Most people go for a disposable filter because it is cheap and easy to install and does the job well.
Disposable filters come in different thickness and frame sizes, but you can only buy a frame size and thickness designed for your system, check the size you need before you buy.
The most important thing to consider when buying an air filter is how freely the air flows through the filter. An overly restrictive filter can literally damage your HVAC system.
Most modern furnaces and air-condition systems require more airflow to function efficiently. The more restrictive a filter is, the harder the fan works to push the air through. This can put a strain on the whole system and cause extensive and expensive damage to your system.
This is also the reason you should change your filters regularly – about once a month or so. A dirty filter restricts the airflow and cause the same damage as a new but overly restrictive filter.
Filter restriction is measured in MERV ratings. The higher the MERV rating the smaller the particles the filter can trap, but the more restrictive the filter is. This means a higher MERV filter is not necessarily the best filter to buy. You can find the MERV rating of some filters on the package. Check before you buy.
A perfect air filter is one that allows free airflow and can trap small particles from the air as much as possible and prevents fluff from entering the system and gives you a nice and cleaner air in your home.
